Advertising

Have you ever looked at an ad and thought about how much brainpower went in to making it memorable?  Advertisers have to be very clever to create an effective ad that communicates a message in a tiny amount of time.  They also need to appeal to the viewer, and be memorable at the same time.  Sometimes they make you feel thoughtful, sometimes they tug on your heartstrings, and sometimes they make you laugh out loud.  What technic were advertisers using in these ads?

Clever Print Ads-  Look at numbers 4, 7, 12, and 30.

What about this one?

Advertisers also use catchy slogans (catch phrases) that will stand out in your mind and make you think of their product.

Do you recognize these catchy slogans?

  • I’m lovin’ it
  • Just Do It
  • Melts in your mouth, not in your hands
  • The happiest place on earth
Your assignment is to get with a partner and design your own special product.  Invent something useful and cool and decide who would want to buy it.  Then create a picture ad and a slogan to advertise your product to the buyers you're shooting for.  Remember, if you're trying to appeal to an elderly person, you will use a different approach than if you're advertising, say, a new video game.

What's News With You?

Writing a news article:

News articles are specific, and must tell a story without using too many words.  It is crucial to include the following details:
-Who is it about
-What happened
-Where did it happen
-When did it happen
-How did it happen

Did you notice that those are the same points you look for when writing a current event response?

"The Two Sides of Me" - Mavrick Robbins

My evil is low and my goodness is great, but the little evil inside me I really do hate.  Every day I commit evil as little as it may be, it grows slowly within me.  I read the Bible, go to church, but is this enough to keep down that evil lurch?  I have overcome evil in all of my days, but soon I may go on my separate ways.

"The Two Sides of Me"- Danyon Burk

The two sides of me are always angry, bashing, smashing and crashing.
They fight and fight until one falls down.  That is when the other controls me.

Lashing and swinging, the other tries
to get control of my mind.

They never stop, for one must win.  When Good loses he weeps and cries, because he feels bad for me.

"The Two Sides of Me"- Gavynn Melani

The two sides of me, the good and the bad, are at constant battle in my head.

The good wins a few, the bad comes around and the good battens down the hatches until there's no sound.
He looks out and to his horror, utter destruction lies all around.

Good on my left shoulder, bad on my right, they tell me what to do all through the night.
Now you know about the addicting bad I have to fight.

"The Two Sides of Me"- Ally Hyden

I didn't realize.
Didn't realize my evil side.
When you're a kid, they call it ignorance or mischief.
The truth is, it's evil.
My evil side is a demon of insincerity,
unhelpful, unkind.
She would twist the words so it would seem she was innocent, not guilty.
How awful!  How unforgivable.  How despicably, unreliably horrible.
My good side is kind.
An angel in the wind,
a star in a black sky.
Beautiful.
"Help more," she said. "Help more."
Why two sides?  Why not one- the good one?
Why?
