Periods and Commas in Quotation Marks

Periods and Commas in Quotation Marks

Rule one:  ? or !

If it’s part of the quotation, it goes inside the quotation marks.

-I have never read the article, “Where Are They Now?”

If it’s not part of the quotation, it goes outside the q.marks.

-Have you ever seen the TV show, “Spongebob Squarepants”?

Rule two:  , or .

Commas and periods always go inside the q.marks, no matter what.

-“Diane,” she said, “put the book down and go outside for a little while.”

-“I will in a minute,” she replied, “as soon as I finish this chapter.”
