Writing a Great Lead

BAD LEADS:
I am going to tell you about snakes.
You will learn about Columbus in this paragraph.
In my report I will compare and contrast plant and animal cells.

Leads can be as short as one or two sentences and as
long as a paragraph.

GREAT LEADS:
• raise questions that make you wonder;
• contain an anecdote that fascinates;
• create a mood that appeals to you;
• open with information that’s new to you;
• introduce an unusual setting;
• have action that intrigues.

QUESTIONS THAT HELP YOU ANALYZE A LEAD:
Did you learn what the piece is about?
What did the author do that grabbed you?
What made the lead boring?
What did the lead make you wonder?
What details does the lead include?
How could this lead be improved?

Write about a time when you made a special gift for someone in your family or for a friend. How did
you know what they would like? How did you make the gift? What was the person's reaction? Write a
story about this event.

Why the Seasons Change

Why do the seasons change?

In ancient times, people didn't know the scientific reason behind why things happened, so they made up stories to explain them.

According to an ancient Greek myth, Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. Hades, the god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone and carried her off to his kingdom to be his wife. Demeter searched everywhere for her daughter. Finally, Zeus, the king of the gods, told Demeter where Persephone was. It was decided that Persephone would live with Hades for half the year and with her mother for the other half. During the time that Persephone lived in the underworld, Demeter was so unhappy that all the plants withered and died. But when Persephone returned each year, Demeter rejoiced and plants could grow again. According to the myth, this is the reason for summer, fall, winter, and spring.
